Peonage, Slavery by Another Name
We’re living through interesting times.
Recently you may have heard discussion around how racism in America is institutionalized and systemic, but not been fully aware of exactly what that means. Here’s some pretty disgusting history I just learned about that illustrates how this institutionalizing began. It’s called peonage and it was a practice that essentially extended slavery by dishonestly arresting people of color for minor violations, imposing long sentences, and then leasing these prisoners out to the very businesses that were previously slave owners.
